If you missed celebrating this weekend “5 de Mayo”, don’t worry! Here we show you a little bit about how you can make any other day “5 de Mayo” with these delicious dishes!

But first… #DidYouKnow 5 de Mayo  is one of the celebrations that have been adopted in the United States that share certain similarities to other holidays that have been celebrated for years, such as St. Patrick’s day, which is of Irish origin: they share a marketing that denotes a totally different meaning than what the countries whose origin is these celebrations actually celebrate.

 

One thing that is typical during the 5 de Mayo celebrations in the United States is food. As part of the cultural heritage that Mexico has donated to the world, there are thousands of dishes that we can taste during that day and any other days if we really want to give ourselves a Mexican gastronomic tour. So, let us tell you a bit of true Mexican food.

 

We in the United States usually eat burritos or chimichangas and tacos with scratched Cheddar cheese, but it should be noted that these dishes are part of the Tex-Mex cultural, which we do not say is something negative, however, the reality is that it is a little different from traditional Mexican food.

 

Having said that, here we leave you a small list of dishes that, in addition to being delicious in flavor, contribute a lot to our body is totally healthy!

Ingredients

  • 1 dozen corn tortillas, preferably stale, or left out overnight to dry out a bit, quartered or cut into 6 wedges
  • Corn oil
  • Salt
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups red chili sauce or green chili sauce

 

Garnishes

  • Fresh cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Coriander chopped
  • Red onion chopped
  • Avocado slice

 

This dish can easily be made for a family breakfast, as it yields too much and it should be said that in addition to being very rich, it is something you will find in any house in Mexico in the morning.

Tacos de Carne Asada

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs flank steak
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 avocados
  • 3 tbsp cotija cheese
  • 1/3 cup onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 6 tortillas
  • limes, for garnish

 

One of the typical dishes you’ll find in Mexico, carne asada tacos are something that no one can resist!

Tacos de Carnitas

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients for Carnitas:

  • 1/2 (pounds) boneless pork shoulder roast
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

 

For the tacos:

  • Corn Tortillas
  • 4 leaves green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 cup very thinly sliced red onion
  • 1 cup pico de gallo

The carnitas or in this case pork tacos, are originating from the state of Michoacán and this dish will be a magical road to paradise when you taste them, you will feel an explosion of flavors and the best way is to eat them inside a taco because of #WhyNot?

Carne Asada

Ingredients:

  • 2 limes juiced
  • 4 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 jalapeno minced
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 pounds flank or skirt steak

 

It is arguably the equivalent of BBQ in the United States, but with the Mexican touch. This dish is known especially in the northern part of Mexico where it is ideal for parties and family gatherings, even without having to celebrate something many Mexicans gather to make carne asada.

Chicken Enchiladas

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (10 ounces) enchilada sauce, divided
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, cubed
  • 1-1/2 cups sauce
  • 2 cups cubed cooked chicken
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (4 ounces) chopped green peppers
  • 10 flour tortillas (6 inches)
  • 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • Optional: Shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, sour cream, and sliced ripe olives

 

Another of the typical dishes are enchiladas, where they can be Swiss, in green sauce, red or as you like! In addition, these can be in oven oil, chicken or beef, whatever as you like!

Pollo en Mole*

* This dish is probably the most complicated to make, but if you want to wrap yourself inside a typical Mexican dish, don’t hesitate to carry it out.

 

Ingredients:

  • 4 large or 6 medium skinless chicken breasts, cut into thirds or quarters
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or good cooking spray for sautéing
  • 2 cups good quality low-sodium chicken stock
  • 1 medium red onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 cup almond butter (almond puree, make sure well mixed, almond oil tends to separate from almond butter)
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 ounces good quality unsweetened dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 small firm tomato, seeded and 1/4-inch diced, for garnish

 

As we told you before, it is probably the most complicated dish to make, but the moment you decide to prepare it you will not only be preparing a typical Mexican dish, but you will be getting to know and involve yourself in the culture of the state of Puebla, where the Battle of Puebla took place on May 5, 1862.

Guacamole

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients:

  • 2 avocados
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cloved garlic, minced
  • 1 riped tomato, chopped
  • 1 lime (juice)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

This more than a saucer, we can consider as an entrance to a meeting with friends or a party, as there is nothing better than a rich and fresh guacamole in the company of “totopos” (tortilla chips).

Take a Tequila shot!

Ingredients:

 

This is probably the simplest of all the steps to follow, but here it’s not about mixing tequila with some other liquor or coloring to make it “more fun,” it’s just taking it straight as Mexicans do.

 

There are certain dishes that are made with tortilla chips (like chilaquiles) which, at the time of biting the crunchy base of these, we can hurt our gums, and this, in turn, we can hurt our teeth and make them very sensitive, tortilla chip bits might get between our teeth hurting your gums and causing bacteria to accumulate in those spaces.

 

Also eating foods that have many condiments and most of them are sauces, can affect our teeth. If we have sensitive teeth or have just had a recent dental procedure like a dental implant, it is not at all recommended to eat this type of food, as we would have a setback in our recovery.

 

If you are going to eat any of the typical Mexican sauces, we recommend having a glass of water on one side, and not only to take away the spicy but also to be able to rinse out your mouth of what we are eating.

 

Additionally, it works when we drink alcoholic drinks, as in this case it is very familiar to hear “tequila” or “margarita”, having beside us a glass of water will help us from the consequences of alcohol towards our mouth, which creates a layer between the tongue and the teeth, which in turn will become bacteria.
